Yuliya Scarf

by Tanya Klimova

Yuliya Scarf

My friend Yuliya loves things that are one-of-a-kind without screaming it. So I decided to knit her a scarf with a cable pattern one could not find at a store. Browsing through Barbara Walker’s A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, I found the briar rose pattern, which I used for the side panels. I set off the wildness of the briar rose with a structured, clean, open cable in the center panel. Named after my friend, the Yuliya scarf is long and warm to keep out the worst winter chill.

Row 1, 3, 5 (WS): k1 *p1, k1 * to end.
Row 2, 4, 6 (RS): p1, *k1, p1 * to end.

Continue in pattern as set until scarf measures 3 feet from cast-on edge. Leave stitches on a needle holder, spare needle, or scrap yarn. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

(Note: if desired, continue working until scarf measures 6 feet or desired length. Increase 1 stitch on last row of pattern and work 7 rows in 1×1 rib. The pattern will not be symmetrical on each end.)

Make the second half of the scarf the same way. Be sure to end in the same place as for the first half.

Grafting

Kitchener stitch for grafting knit stitches:

Thread yarn tail through DN. Hold knitting needles with stitches to be grafted so that one needle is in front of the other, with RS of work facing out.

Set up: Pass DN through the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl. Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if you knit.

(Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to knit and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on front needle as if to purl.

Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to purl and drop it off needle. Pas DN through next stitch on back needle as if to knit.)

Repeat instructions in (parentheses) to graft together knit stitches.

Kitchener stitch for grafting purl stitches:

Thread yarn tail through DN. Hold knitting needles to be grafted so that one needle is in front of the other, RS facing out.

Set up: Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to knit. Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to purl.

(Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to purl and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on front needle as if to knit.

Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to knit and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on back needle as if to purl.)

Repeat instructions in (parentheses) to graft purl stitches.

Yuliya Scarf (detail)

Finishing

Put the two halves of the scarf onto knitting needles so that when the two halves are held with their WS together, both needles are pointed to the right and the one of the yarn tails is on the right side.

Use kitchener stitch to graft the two halves together. When grafting combinations of knit and purl stitches, use appropriate instructions. Set up instructions for kitchener stitch need only be followed at the beginning of a row.

Weave in ends. Block if desired.

Other Notes

The scarf is worked in two halves, starting at each end. After completing one half, its live stitches are placed on stitch holders or scrap yarn, and the second half is knitted. The two halves are then grafted in the center to give symmetrical ends.

If desired, the scarf can be knit in one piece. The patterns will then appear to climb up one end of the scarf and down the other.

Since this is a scarf, gauge is quite flexible. Don’t worry if you are having trouble meeting row gauge, since you are knitting by length and not by row.

The Briar Rose pattern was taken from Barbara Walker’s Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The Double-Knotted Lattice pattern was adapted from Vogue: the Ultimate Knitting Guide but has appeared in the Treasury as well.

Pattern is presented both in charts and written format.
